Cutting Edge Stencils Shares Simple Steps To Paint A Leather Bar Stool Using Stencils

Welcome back, my little DIY darlings!  Cutting Edge Stencils hopes that everyone is having a T-riffic Tuesday.  We sure are!  Wondering what has us all jazzed up today?  Well, we have a stencil idea that is so easy, it will knock your creative socks off!  It dawned on us that we’ve told you in the past that you can use our stencils on chairs, like in this post, and we’ve showed you a fab way to steal a designer look, like the chair shown below, but we never actually told you the simple steps to stencil a chair. So we put together a step-by-step tutorial on how to stencil a leather chair or bar stool.  This is a relatively easy project and the outcome is absolutely stunning.

We want you to meet Amy, the decorating enthusiast and crafty blogger behind Amy’s Casablanca.   Amy rocks when it comes to thinking up new things to stencil and since her original post she’s become the queen of stenciling leather stools!   It all started when she fell head over heels in love with a set of fabric covered bar stools that had a pretty pattern and a designer price tag attached to them.  As the Mom of three boys, she knew these would not stand a chance with her kids.  Amy put her creative thinking cap on and decided to try stenciling a set of leather stools.  The leather would be easier for her to wipe down after mealtime and the stencil would give them the pretty pattern she craved.  She bought a pair of bar stools on Overstock.com but later found that Target also carried a decent leather bar stool. Using our stencil and some paint, Amy was able to create designer looking bar stools for a fraction of the cost.  She had this to say about her stencil experience, “I honestly have never had so much fun making something.  It really was easy and I enjoyed every minute of it.”  Let’s take a look at how she pulled the whole thing together!

Materials Checklist

Here’s the 411 on how-to paint your leather chairs…

1. Get Started: Make sure you have all your materials listed above.

2. Prepare the Surface:  Very lightly sand the surface of the chairs to give the paint something to grip.  Then clean the chair with a damp rag to ensure all of the dust has been removed.

3.  Secure the Stencil: Use painter’s tape to secure and reposition your stencil as you paint the pattern on the chair. Here’s a little trick if you are painting more than one color; mark tape off the area that will be painted in the second color with a small piece of tape, as shown below.

4. Start Stenciling: Pour some paint onto a plate or paint tray.  Then dip your stencil brush into the paint.  Blot off the excess paint onto your folded paper towel until the brush looks almost dry. It is key to use as little paint as possible when stenciling. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed and smudge. Always start with the edges. Use a dabbing motion with your stencil brush to start painting in from the edges of your design.  For this project, Amy used light grey and mustard Angelus paint that she purchased on turtlefeather.net.

5. Tape, Paint, Repeat! You may need to reposition your stencil to complete the pattern around the entire chair by lining it up with the already painted pattern.
